Minecraft - This game needs its own thread!
September 29th 2010, 09:42 CEST by G-Man

It seems like everybody with a PC and a pulse is currently playing Minecraft. And for good reason too - the game is nothing less than a revelation. Who knew that such a simple suite of world-building tools and a procedurally generated universe could be the source of nearly endless entertainment? Like digital LEGO, the game sets players free to build to their hearts content, limited only by their own patience (or madness) and willingness to see a project through.

Now you don't have to be left out of the block-shaped insanity. Gabe has set up an official Planetcrap Minecraft server for our enjoyment. Just enter port 5000 of his vanity domain as the IP address in the multiplayer mode to connect with the server and start building something awesome!

Also, you assume I didn't use the beta.

I am trying the no status bar thing. I am not sure sure the saved 15 pixels are worth having to retrain where I look and get my details...but I am giving it a shot.

I'm not exactly sure why you'd ever want to be ignorant of the, well, status of your browser - unless you choose to blindly trust it to do your bidding at all times, that is. In which case I can only wish you good luck.

I don't know about you guys but in mine the status activates whenever the browser is doing something.

Forging ahead with my indie games stuffs. Finally teaching myself 3D. Starting out with a simple low poly character.

Ortho sketch.

Starting to model.

Getting more advanced with the arm.

My eureka moment where it turns out I actually understand some of what I'm doing (the arm again).

Blender. As of v2.5, the interface got a total overhaul. Even has a preset to make it behave like Maya or Max, key wise, right in prefs. Love it.

I know, Wudi!

I have been SLOWLY pushing ahead with Unity. Interesting stuff and highly involved. You dudes that do game dev for living have some complicated tools I am sure...

Unity is nice. My head is not fully wrapped around the concept of just dragging in little scripts. It's built around writing little scripts, e.g. "translate object toward position of input A with a speed of X", and then you drag that onto the objects you want to affect. And that's simple and all, but I'm really stuck in the mindset of having a loop with a bunch of functions in that makes shit happen. Unity makes that infinitely more scalable, but also pushes the setup and overview into the domain of the graphical editor instead of just a little text file.

The problem is my inability to learn and adopt, not Unity itself.

My only programming experience is a bit of Actionscript/Flash. The approach seems similar. I'm eager to try it out.

The final renders are done and have been sent to Gabe, so get on his ass to unzip the files and host them. They're too big for... pretty much any hosting service.

Pretty much confirms that m0nty won the server, except someone seems to either be in the process of making or has already abandoned a pretty serious glass pyramid.

I want to go to there.

I vote for a restart with no godmode.

A restart is boring. I vote for everyone with god mode to go in there and plant explosives everywhere, then invite everyone in for the finale.

I want to go to there.

I'll get to finish it... one of these days. It also has a underground part, which is also only 3/4 finished.

Also, Minecraft sold a million copies after it went Beta. It will also feature achievements in Beta 1.5 and final version is supposed to come out on the same day as Skyrim. Which is a particularly cruel thing to do to Bethesda.

I just finished a 1:1 scale model of the Tomb of Horrors and I want some help wiring up the traps.

Sounds like a design challenge schnee. Just make a small-scale prototype first, implement early, test often ;)

Oh yeah. Now that 1.8.1 has been released, I would be kinda curious to see thanksgabe.com running again. Please, Gabe? Or alternatively, is there a world copy available for download?
