Return of the King
December 17th 2003, 17:41 CET by CheesyPoof

The final installment is out.  Discuss how good it is, or isn't, or if it will get Oscars for PJ, or not, or whatever else, or if you want to see him film The Hobbit too, or not, just keep it all in one place.

* Be thankful I wasn't a nerd and made the topic title something stupid like "All Hail the King, baby."

The President, unfortunately, doesn't need to see the people.  He needs to see poll results, he needs to see votes, he needs to see support from Congress (which, believe it or not, insinuates support from the people because they are elected representatives, too).  Protesting is all fine and dandy, but it hasn't solved much of anything in recent years.  Want to make a difference?  Vote, participate in local elections, hell, RUN FOR A LOCAL OFFICE.  Work your day job, but attend town hall meetings once a month.

The Pres can keep you off the lawn for now, but he can't keep you from trying to force him out through the installed democratic process.

There's no sense beating a dead horse -- but if you've reached the point where you even seriously consider that abusing a dead animal might improve your lot in life, I say go ahead and give it a shot.

There used to be a time in the US where any person could go up to the white house ask to see the president and be led right in.  Now, thanks to the crazies and secret service, that is no longer possible.  You need to pay to play.

That's nice. But, uh.. everywhere he goes? I can understand keeping them off the lawn, but out of the president's eye completely?

A few things. First when ever the president makes an appearance it's a carefully controlled media event, and you don't want people that'd give a negative impression in your media events. Second it's a rather good security measure considering the fact the appearances are likely to attract the more hardcore groups that have the time to attend every one (compare the WTO protest to the more localized antiwar stuff to see why that wouldn't be a good thing). Lastly event host tend to get over zealous trying to make a good media/personal impression when someone important shows up expanding more reasonable request into something totally different.

Hello musty old thread!

I finally saw The Return of the King tonight. I had made it through 3/5th's of the book (just past the ring being destroyed and everyone all reunited and being warm and fuzzy) and kind of felt like the story was over, even though at that point there were still some 200 pages left. Unless 150 of those pages were maps or hobbit dictionaries, I couldn't really figure out what was up, since the story was over.

But apparently the Shire is scoured and Saruman becomes Boss Hogg there until it all gets saved. If this is an accurate summation, then Peter Jackson deserves an Oscar for simply ending it where he did and not giving us a five freaking hour movie (on top of having three or four endings as it is).

I enjoyed the movie. I missed the stuff that was cut (Faramir seemed to get the short end of the stick again) but it was good orcish fun overall.

Carry on.

Well he got an Oscar anyway.  Three of them I think.

Yes, one for each ending, as Billy Crystal said.

I walked past the tv as Billy Crystal was making fun of random members of the audience by mimicking their voices. That man really needs to die.

Only as much as you deserve.

It was my birthday today so I finally went out to see Return of the King tonight, seemed like a good enough end to the series.  Orcs, swords, hairy men and bigass chunks of rock hitting things were all present and correct, the only thing that irked me was Frodo and Sam going from orc armour to clothes without an explanation.  Well that and Sam being a blubbering bitch.  Stupid Fat Hobbit.

And if you care, I got an inflatable dinghy for my birthday.  Don't ask me why, I don't know.  But it's possibly better than the year I got an axe.  Or the time I got a rocking chair...

At 666 there lives a Mister Miller, hes our local vicar and a serial killer.

I remember reading about that cut. Apparently Jackson didn't like it either, and that he'd put that scene back in the EE. He took it out due to time constraints.

My name it is Sam Hall an' I hate you, one and all. An' I hate you, one and all. Damn your eyes.

Ugh, in the past I thought he was pretty funny at the Oscars.  Has he got stupider, or have I actually matured?
