Slicing The Internet to Bits
July 22nd 2004, 06:39 CEST by Jibble

Most advertisers in Florida don't care about customers in Ohio, so it's beneficial for many search engines and directories to localize their campaigns.  Both Verizon and Google have entered the pay-per-click model of local advertising, much to the benefit (and sometimes detriment) of consumers.  For Verizon, it's a no-brainer as providing listings in specific geographies is exactly what a phone book should do.  For Google, it's a bit trickier, as they are moving further into the portal style of browsing rather than relying only on their core search technology.  As the focus of the Internet on individual users narrows, what will the long-term effects be?  Do you prefer a Google with a zip code section in the search box to help your search?  What non-commercial applications of this would you like to see?

So that's what happens when you feed trolls...

I'm having a bit of trouble with the topic. It's asking for other potential uses for localized searchings?.. Unless I'm ordering a pizza through google I guess I can't see the extreme relevance with that. It's a technology that makes it easier to display relevant ads of course, as the topic mentions.. but I can't decide if that's a good or bad thing. I guess good.

Gaggle what you can get out of google local depends on where you are. Around here it's mainly a hyped up on-line yellow pages, but a quick search for coffee houses in Seattle turned up more interesting results (wireless hot spot locations, and a few articles/reviews on various places, other fun little things). It should get more useful as the spiders and search is tuned to pick up on more locally relatable stuff (including Better Business Bureau reports would be handy for example).

Localization aside, it's a little disheartening to see six pages of DVD-by-mail links when all you want is a movie review -- or pinatas, or land speed records, or whatever. Advanced search is helping less and less.

How exactly does google limiting search results to a given zip code or city result in google becoming more yahooey or portal like? You aren't being herded off into some limited directory half filled with national sites anyway, rather you're filtering results based on a local yellow page listing (you'd find the exact same sites in a normal search it's just take you longer). Nor are you being given a page of off site content to look at while they show you ads (google news is sure but not google local).

Isn't there kind of a side-topic in the topic? The question that the CNN.com article seems to raise is: what is the likelyhood of the internet being divided up into zones, no longer being a global medium? From a commercial point of view, the globalness of the internet is usually irrelevant. Even if you could get customers from the other side of the globe, payment comes with certain hassles.

It would totally destroy the internet as an information source, though, if Internet: The Commercial Platform gains priority.

IMHO, location-based search is only really useful if you're on the road, looking for something. A coffee shop for example. If they can deliver good "show me the nearest coffeeshop/gas station/whorehouse/supermarket in a radius of 2 klicks" on any handheld device, this might become a success. (Not necessarily in the US, because IIRC correctly, Starbucks is already that widespread. So are gas stations and supermarkets.)

From that article:
it is a bit more comparable to systems that many of you own today. This Dell machine featured an Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz processor and 2GB of DDR400 Ram all on an i875 motherboard.

This is why I discard benchmarks as having any value.

My cell phone does this, and I love the feature. [ad]I use AT&T and have their mMode internet service on my plan. Last week I was up in Sherman Oaks for a meeting with a developer, and right afterwards something came up that required me to get online as fast as possible. So I used my phone to find the nearest Starbucks since I know they all have wifi hot spots. I've used it a few other times, too, when my husband and I are traveling and don't know the area and we've needed to find something like an ATM. The service has about 50 different categories of things to search for (coffee shops, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, etc.). It'll auto-locate me to find the stuff, too, so it works if I'm in LA or if I'm in Phoenix. It's neat stuff.

They say not, but it did go gold a few days ago now and it doesn't ship for just under two weeks, so unless they're too busy shooting rockets full of money up in the air you'd think they'd have time to whip up a demo.

Why, it's not like any of those cards choked. And I'm sure after some driver updates, things will be closer.

I mean, I'm seeing a lot of lame forum posts about, Ooh, those guys that bought the ATI cards will feel stupid now, and guess this means people will start buying cards based on a game, and all I can think of is Whatever. And the cola wars start all over again.

Anyone who feels bad about buying one 500 dollar video card over another is pretty much too stupid to have money anyway.

So glad because

"What is going to be surprising to many of you is that ATI's flagship Radeon X800XT-PE card has been outperformed by NVIDIA's GeForce 6800GT. This is not a fluke and it is a result you will see repeated throughout our results."

"At the upper end of the scale with AA turned on it starts to look as if the Radeon X800XT-PE may not be worthy of being included on the same graph as we see average performance fall close to the 30 frames per second mark. Certainly this is not something you would want to experience on your $500 video card."

"But not all is lost for the X800XT-PE as you can see when you drop the resolution down and bring the AA level up things start to look much more in line with the other flagship cards."

Yeah, I want to drop the resolution down on my new video card to play a game at acceptable framerates.  Great.

"The addition of the ATI X800Pro to the comparison really only points out how well our other cards are performing. It is painfully obvious that the Radeon X800Pro’s 4 missing pipelines are subjecting it to a big performance penalty with DOOM 3."

"Turning on 4X Antialiasing certainly does impact the frame rates by a good deal. If fact, judging by pure frame rate alone, we would have to say that the ATI X800Pro is giving an unacceptable level of performance while the rest of the three still stay above our imaginary 30FPS mark."

"As the resolution comes down, our cards’ frame rate performances start to look very similar with the exception of the ATI X800Pro. It seems as if the Radeon X800Pro is going to have a very hard time holding a candle to the 6800 series card and the great performance we are seeing from them."

"it looks as if ATI's decision to scale their current line of flagship video cards by crippling the Radeon X800Pro’s graphics pipelines to 12 pipes, instead of the 16 pipes of the Radeon X800XT-PE might have been a bad move, at least in terms of satisfying DOOM 3 players."

"Looking at the cream of the crop in video cards, it is painfully obvious that ATI is going to have to make some changes in their product line to stay competitive, at least with DOOM 3 gamers. There is no way for a $500 X800XT-PE to compete with a $400 6800GT when the GT is simply going to outperform the more expensive card by a good margin."

And from Carmack himself,

" it should be noted that some of the ATI cards did show a performance drop when colored mip levels were enabled, implying some fudging of the texture filtering."

So glad I waited and bought NVidia.

I know my machine will run it decently enough, and I'm sure that a year or two down the line, any new hardware I put in my machine will make it run that much better.
