A few driving games:

Gran Turismo 3 is a great straight driving simulation. One of the most complete games I've ever seen, in terms of the depth. Sadly there just aren't enough tracks to keep me interested. I think there's a new one out soon.

Burnout 3 provides equal depth, ridiculously stupid fun, and loads more variation - loads of different game types that don't get boring and fantastic multiplayer. The crashing game is totally inspired - easy to learn, difficult to master. There's nothing quite like the sound of churning metal followed by the morbid wail of a horn, permanently depressed by a pregnant mother's shattered brain-pan.

Mashed is fantastic fun in 3 or 4 person multiplayer - a lot like micromachines - but the singleplayer is insipid and the graphics don't warrant the lengthy loading times.

Heh. I just got back from a poker game. I was galled to fold on 5-2 unsuited only to see another three 5s appear on the flop. I finished second, eventually, which was pleasant, and lucky, since I was playing really badly this evening.

Can anyone think of a good name for the poker society we've just started? So far the best names we've got are

Muck Shuffle
Pocket Rockets Poker
Poker Knights
Pokerhontis
Pokermon
and some others that are even worse.

As you can tell, and as I've been telling my friends, these names are deeply shit.

Peyton got me 43 points tonight...  what a fricking game.  The Colts just kept pounding in the first half and then once the Packers caught on they couldn't blitz manning like a 3 day old...colt...they started to slow them down, but they still didn't stop them.  Amazing.

Now just think if the Colts had a defense of any measure.  They some good singular plays today, but on an overall basis, they weren't great.

Also, Jean came just about through my home.  Eye was just north of us.  Just got power back a few minutes ago (watched the game at my brother's place).  Lots of wind, lots of good waves at the beach, lots of fun.

So now that Sony have announced the smaller PS2 (or PStwo?) I'm finally going to pick one up. Obviously I want to get a bundle with a load of games (EB here will stick 6 second hand ones in for next to nothing).

So far I know I want GTA:SA (loved the other two on the PC), I also want ICO, and its highly likely I'll pick up an eyetoy so I can chat with friends in new zealand (and also play boxing robots).

I'm not into sports simulators except driving games, but I could do with recommendations on what I should buy or rent as the choice out there is stupidly huge.

Anyone?

I was thinking of picking up a PSTwo for ICO, Star Ocean, Phantom Brave, and a bunch of other games that I can't remember anymore. I'm gonna hold of on San Andreas until the updated, prettier xbox version.

I as well, would like any recommendations. I'm into pretty much anything except sports games except for Hockey and driving games (although I've got more than enough racing games already).

While burnout 3 is an awesome game, it just can't ever be described as having "equal depth" as Gran Turismo 3.  GT3 has all that fruity engine customization stuff.  It's far too deep for me, and I like driving games.

Also, asshole is wrong. Ask anyone about Jak 2 and they'll tell you that. Also, Dragon Warrior 7 is one of the best RPGs ever. Worlds better than any Final Fantasy. There's a reason why it was the best-selling PSX game in Japan.

Er... the rest I don't disagree with is what that post should have said.

And DO NOT buy DW7... it is really really really fucking boring and has lots of custscenes (in-engine forced talks ala Golden Sun) so I can't understand how Bob can like it. You have to play for like 5 hours before you even get in your first fight. Go read a walkthrough at gamefaqs for the game to see what I mean. The big draw of the game is that the world is huge and has lots of NPCs with unique things to say. But who cares how huge the world is when the only way you can interact with it is by searching chests and using the "talk" command. For all the characters there is really no character development to speak of. This is not like a traditional RPG at all. The only thing going for it is the combat, which if you haven't played a DW game before, is extremely repetitive and not as graphically entertaining as you may be used to. The monster heart or essence or whatever system is neat, but Final Fantasy Adventure did that ten years ago. The reason it sold so well in Japan is because they are insane. DW7 is like Animal Crossing meets Final Fantasy for them except boring.

Also Jak 1 wasn't really that great. It was too easy and the controls were a little floaty. The wider range of gameplay compared to a normal platformer is what made the game fun, but the story and cutscenes weren't as polished as they could have been. The game is on par with Haven: Call of the King, which isn't saying all that much. It also suffers from some uninspired missions, e.g. too much DKC style collect the 100 doodads quests. In short, it was no Mario 64, but it compared favorably to the other platformers available. Jak 2 does all of this better. And Bob, how can you NOT prefer Jak 2 with its so-called GTA influences?

As for budget games I would recommend:

Devil May Cry 1
Onimusha 3 (much better controls than the previous ones)
One of the Dynasty Warriors games - just get the cheapest one - maybe just rent it actually.
FFX if you like the series
Tony Hawk 3 or 4 if you haven't played them
Sly Cooper (a rental because it is quick to beat - but might take a little longer to unlock all the time trials if you suck at platformers)
DDR or one of the kareoke games if you have a girlfriend
Beyond Good and Evil if you haven't played it yet.
Champions of Norrath
Disaster Report
James Bond: Everything or Nothing (probably not budget yet)
Simpsons: Hit and Run
Timesplitters 2 if you like playing splitscreen multiplayer shooters ala Goldeneye
Zone of the Enders

Devil May Cry 1

Not really interested.

Onimusha 3 (much better controls than the previous ones)

This is out for xbox as well, innit?

One of the Dynasty Warriors games - just get the cheapest one - maybe just rent it actually.

will do.

FFX if you like the series

GOOD GOD NO!

Tony Hawk 3 or 4 if you haven't played them

Don't care. Can play it on xbox if I did.

Sly Cooper (a rental because it is quick to beat - but might take a little longer to unlock all the time trials if you suck at platformers)

Sure thing! I'll probably buy it.

DDR or one of the kareoke games if you have a girlfriend

Hahahahahahahaha!!! (so lonely...)

Beyond Good and Evil if you haven't played it yet.

I'm a BG&E fanb0i if you haven't noticed.

Champions of Norrath

I've already played Dark Alliance 1 & 2.

Disaster Report

Never heard of it, but I'll give it a shot.

James Bond: Everything or Nothing (probably not budget yet)

another xbox game?

Simpsons: Hit and Run

xbox!

Timesplitters 2 if you like playing splitscreen multiplayer shooters ala Goldeneye

I was considering picking up the GCN timesplitters at one time.

Zone of the Enders

never heard of it, I'll probably check it out.
